Gingerbread

Ingredients

  • 1lb plain flour
  • 6 ozs black treacle
  • 8 ozs dark brown sugar 
  • 6 ozs golden syrup
  • 6 oz margarine
  • 1 egg
  • ½ pint of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salf

    Method

  • Sift dry ingredients.
  • Put sugar, margarine, treacle and syrup in a pan and melt gently.
  • Mix in milk and egg
  • Pour into the dry mixture and stir thoroughly.
  • Turn into a lined 9 inch square tin.
  • Bake at 345 F for about 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • Turn out onto a wire rack to cool. Store in an airtight tin if possible for a day or two.
